Communicate
A mom, a dad, a step dad, and a young adult with autism, all come together for a session with me (Julie) in Arizona. Sean was excited that his father, who lives out of state, got to join us for the first time. Sean was newly open ended with me, meaning in the previous few trips to AZ he was able to share a few sentences of his own thoughts on a letter board.
I could see a confidence shining in him on this day and I decided to bring out the keyboard. Most of our work in the past was on a letter board. So this was a big step! And Sean stepped up big time.
Sean had a message for his 17 year old younger brother.
RORY I MISS YOU. ARE YOU MISSING ME? REALLY WANT TO HAVE FUNNY FAMILY TIME LISTENTING TO YOUR MUSIC. YOUR MUSIC IS FUNNY AND IT REMINDS ME OF HAPPY TIMES WITH YOU.
Sean's mom confirms: "This is so true! Sean absolutely lights up, smiles when Rory plays his music."
Next, Sean’s father tells Sean he was so upset when he moved to Arizona from New York but he sees Sean has a lot of opportunities in AZ and just wants to make sure Sean is happy and knows his father misses him. Sean looks straight into his father’s eyes and for the first time ever, types on the keyboard:
I DO FEEL HAPPY AND I MISS YOU LOTS FATHER. I LOVE YOU DAD AND I UNDERSTAND AND I FEEL HOW YOU YEARN FOR ME. THE BEST FEELING ROPING OUR SOULS YOU FEEL MY JOY TOO. THE VERY DEEP BONDING HELPS IN HEALING. I FEEL GRATEFUL FOR THE LIFE I HAVE HERE AND WANT YOU AND RORY TO VISIT HERE MORE. I WANT HARMONY FOR US ALL.
The emotion in the room was intense, full of years of yearning. A hole in a father's heart exploded and was filled that day. His mom writes more about the experience on her blog.

This session felt like an extra special experience with all the layers of emotion that were experienced.
